Revive Reconnect Preserve

Zunnar is a Palestinian pop-up cultural center that provides immersive cultural experiences, featuring elements and practices such as the Arabic language, Dabkeh dance, percussion, folktales, and folksongs, all aimed at exploring the traditions, rituals, and values of the culture.

Knowledge is shared in multiple ways, whether its through interactive workshops, or intensive language courses, our main focus is learning and growing as a community.

Workshops

Zunnar provides interactive educational workshops, most recently we’ve given a workshop to learn about the olive harvest season in Falasteen, and learned to read Arabic transliteration as well as sing a few work folksongs that are traditionally used to encourage hard work during olive picking!

Another recent workshop was teaching basic percussion skills and rhythms using the Tableh\Durbakeh and the Daff!

Arabic Language

During my time in Michigan, which has the largest Arab community in America, I was surprised by the lack use of Arabic in the area. I took upon myself to start teaching the language as a means of preserving & sharing the culture.

My teaching style is very flexible and is customizable according to each students needs and learning styles & goals.

I’ve developed my own curriculum from various resources, my own flexible system of scheduling, covering all aspects of the language: Speaking, Reading, Comprehension & Writing.

Dabkeh

Dabkeh is a traditional folklore dance popular in the Levant, for more info you can check out the following source on its origin & variations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dabke

I’ve been practicing Dabkeh for 17 years now (I surprised myself while counting that :p) I’ve been a part of 3 professional Dabkeh troupes including El Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe. As much as I enjoy performing and showcasing Dabkeh on-stage, it was even more rewarding to teach groups & individuals through group & private classes, as well as in workshops. I’ve given classes mainly in The Arab American Museum in Dearborn, and have developed a curriculum for Palestinian Dabkeh.

Testimonials

I started Arabic lessons with Yasmin about a year ago. I was excited but nervous because English was the only language I knew. Yasmin is always positive and supportive. She makes learning fun and non-judgmental, which helped me open up. Each lesson increases my confidence and commitment to learning Arabic. I feel lucky to have such an amazing teacher.

I strongly recommend taking Arabic lessons with Yasmin! She is flexible and adjusts her teaching to fit your needs. Learning the script is important for reading and writing; it can be tough, but Yasmin will help & support you, and it’s very rewarding!
